Goal Zero seems to keep their customers for awhile. I was looking at an article where a guy loved the Boulder 90 and picked up a Boulder 100. These were to go with his Yeti 1000 which it natuarally would charge quicker using two. He wasn’t daisy chaining, he was able to use separte ports on the Yeti which has multiple ways to charge it.
Like I was saying earlier with the stable stands that come with the Boulder 100 moving around for maximum sun time is easy with these units. If weight is an issue as in you need something real lite then you can pick up the Boulder 50. The person lives in New England and loses power 6 to 7 times a year because of snow and ice storms. When I lived in the Boston area that wasn’t a problem but I know it was for people west of us out of town. Especially the ice storms weighing down the power lines.
Picking for a 30ft extension cable on the Boulder 100 is a good idea also. Another thing about Goal Zero is they are known for excellent customer service. They want their product to continue to succeed so they make it easy to contact and get the right info. Like anything else it may cost a bit more but that’s because you’re buying real quality. Excellent reviews at Amazon and people are happy with build quality.
Now that I live in Florida I will pick up one because when the hurricanes come through here which can be about 3 times a year, the power can be out for awhile. And with the compact size it’s easy to store which I don’t have a lot of room now to store large panels and keep them safe.

We’ve still got the tempered glass the aluminum frames and now reinforced corners to be able to go out and play wherever you happen to be out there. so our new Boulder lineup all comes with integrated kickstand. these will allow you to tilt your solar panelto point them at the Sun for more solar production. it’s pretty sweet just on a nice little hinge so this kickstand folds in flush with the panel and as you pull it out you just lean the solar panel back point it towards the Sun and you start producing and charging your batteries.
the kickstand is built so it’s integrated to a little less than a 45 degree angle. since most solar panels and most outdoor play happens in the summer time we wanted to capture more of that summer sun.
when it’s more direct overhead and less out on the horizon so we try to optimize this angle for your benefit. so we’ve made a decision to get away from the mc4 cables and stick to the eight millimeter barrel jacks.
this is going to be a safety precaution so that we can only change our panels in parallel so everything stays at a nice safe 12 volts for the user. with our eight millimeter
chaining cable we can chain up to four of any of our solar panels here that have the eight millimeter barrel jack to plug in through the anderson power pole.
just grab the barrel jack from the solar panel as you plug it in make sure you push hard enough to hear it snap into place and that’s going to give you a nice strong sturdy connection. to make sure that you’re always transmitting power to your battery.

What’s up guys! It’s Chris Majestic here with Majestechs. You remember a few months ago I did a review on the Ring Stick Up Cam. Today with me I have what’s called the Ring Solar Panel. This is going to be an accessory for the Stick Up Cam so we’re going to go ahead and check this thing out today so stay tuned. So if you haven’t already go ahead and check out the Stick Up Cam review I did a few months ago. I went into detail in that review. I’m not going to go into too much detail about the Stick Up Cam here but just really quickly. It’s basically a surveillance camera. They call it the Stick Up Cam because it’s battery-operated and it’s wireless, it’s going to connect to Wifi and you can put it wherever you want. The only real downside was that it didn’t have Live video on-demand. Most people would just expect to go on your phone to view the live video feed to see what’s going on. The Stick Up Cam wouldn’t allow that before. It would remain in standby mode until it sensed motion, then it would connect to Wifi, and then push the video. They did this to conserve battery life since a constant Wifi connection would put a strain on the battery. However, through a recent firmware update earlier this year Ring released Live View for the Stick Up Cam, and to address the possible issues with battery life, they introduced the Ring Solar Panel. So the solar panel is going to keep it constantly powered because it’s getting sunlight during the day and charging it at night, which allows you to have constant power so you don’t drain your battery. The price of the Solar Panel is a separate $49 so you’re looking at around $248 to get both of these together. Even though it is connected to Wifi now and you have Live View, the only downside is that it does take a little while for the video to pop up once you hit the Live View button. In my case, in most instances it took about 15 seconds, sometimes a little bit longer. So that’s something they’ll probably fix in the future but right now it does take a little while for it to come up so you have to be patient with it. As far as the design goes it’s a pretty basic solar panel design. It’s just going to come with a little slot for you to slide the mount into it and the mount is going to have a couple of screw holes for you to mount it to a wall. It also comes with a non-removable micro-usb cable that has a little rubber piece on the end to help make it weather-resistant. And just like the Ring Doorbell and the Stick Up Cam the Solar Panel is covered for theft. That was one of the major selling points for me, especially putting it somewhere where it can easily be reached. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind camera on the market here. It was already one-of-a-kind to begin with but now you can just put up the Solar Panel right along side it and you can put it wherever you want and not have to worry about it. what’s up guys happy Friday to you well as you can see from the video I’m going to do a kind of a quick review here on my brand new anchor solar charger that I got two days ago from Prime right now obviously I’m taping this video here with my iPhone but I just wanted to kind of give some props to this thing and a half-assed little review I mean there’s a lot of reviews on this thing already but what you basically get or what this basically is is a USB charger that accepts any USB cable which goes right in here see that little it’s just a little plastic receiver that they put in here and this is like a canvas material like a really durable canvas material but what they do they have a two USB ports where you can charge on each side and then it’s got like a little pocket here really cool so you could technically take your you know your phone or whatever and put it in that pocket keep it protected from the Sun and what it does is it takes a obviously sunrays converts them into electrical energy and then stores it into whatever battery you have plugged into the anchor unit so obviously my phone’s plugged into this so it’s putting power into the battery that’s sitting here into the iPhone just to give you a quick stat iPhone was a 10 percent when I came out here show you the Sun let’s see there’s my fenceline there’s the Sun you can see that it’s obviously well yeah obviously it’s five o’clock right now so I’m about to lose my son this was a 10 percent when I plugged it in about six minutes ago seven minutes ago it’s at 14% now so it’s gaining about five percent every five minutes a 1% a minute which is pretty awesome it’s a 14 volt solar charger so I believe it puts out that’s the one spec I should know I think it’s putting out four or five volts um yeah actually that’s a technical spec I’m going to put in the bottom I’m not sure how many I know it’s a 14 volt charger maybe it’s putting out 14 volts here but I don’t know got it I got to check the specs on that but um other than that this is the one that’s about 50 bucks on Amazon and what it does folds up like that folds up like that and then there it is to be able to be put away and it’s about the size of a sheet of paper so it’s got these really cool hooks on it so you can hook it up to a pack or whatever and then get charging capability out of it so that’s what’s kind of going on and you’ll see it’s Friday here so got me a favorite beer highligh bossa unsweet tea and this is my other newest latest coolest toy which is the Bose Soundlink mini which is a basically a portable USB bluetooth speaker so what I do is I come out here put the tunes on on the back of the truck hang out with the dogs just kind of enjoy being outside so this Bluetooth speaker was about 200 bucks it’s kind of built the same way like Apple creates their stuff with the aluminum case and I put some felt feet up on the bottom of mine so I don’t damage the bottom but this thing throws some serious sound for a tiny little speaker I mean there’s a there’s a can a beer and you can kind of see the size it’s pretty badass sounds a lot better than the beats pill when I listen to both of them together but that’s strictly opinion but yeah this is my little outside rig here so basically I use my phone I Bluetooth it to the Bose with you know pan door or whatever on and now I can finally keep my phone charged out here without damn thing dying on me because I got a really crappy iPhone 4s with a really old battery so yeah guys that’s my little review on the anchor solar charger and again don’t quote me on the on the voltage output I’m not sure if it’s just 5 volts or if it’s all 14 or what so check that on the specs but yeah happy Friday guys see ya

everyone solar panel came in today it’s bigger than I thought but the dimensions correct four feet by about two and a half feet something so i’m going to go ahead and open the box and see what we got good padding a half-inch thick one of those soft soft phone this is the HQ st model on amazon because with the mc4 connectors let’s see if there’s anything else alright so i’m going to go ahead and test this out on my balcony with my mini small aquaponic system but later on I’m going to be moving it to the patio area and power everything under the patio or in the patio area with this hopefully will power everything because there’s only 100 watts I don’t even have the battery yet so there’s no backup or anything so just going to test it we’re going to get to correct voltage amps that we’re going to get out of these 100 watt so I’ll be back after I do all that testing just setting this on the balcony door not even outside in the light yet and we’re already getting 11.7 4 volts so it’s almost a 12 maybe when indirect light he’ll probably boost it up to 12 but I don’t think it’s that bad because is getting 11 volts so I’m gonna go take it outside just connect an aquaponic system to it and let’s see how that goes I don’t have the MC for connection and everything yet but I’m just gonna you know Mickey Mouse something real quick to connect the cable and everything alright alright so I rigged it up on this a 5 volts car charger because it was getting 17 points something volts and I think it’s gonna be too strong for my USB power pump that only takes nine volts and I just connect to the cable back there you know just a poor testing right now so I’m it’s not going to be permit so it’s just loosely connected to the connection this is connected here um and it’s actually getting five point two five point zero two bolts when I tested it with this and it was getting 17 before that and in the water flow still pretty good so you don’t leave this here right now and hopefully I can get everything all connected as I move it later out to the patio area which isn’t gonna be too bad so actually got 17 points something as it was rated and if you guys want to know more information or like to watch more videos when I get this installed up on a patio area go ahead and subscribe for future video all right thank you notice i just noticed something from all the cell’s this one look like it shattered or something this way different from the others so look like it shattered I’m not too sure what to do about that we’re bucking just return it and get another one or something to just leave it alone but uh let’s see I don’t know

Stick and Peel Solar Panels
Peel and stick solar panels were first developed in 2008 by an Irvine construction company known as Lumeta. Many solar companies among them Uni-Solar and others have also taken to manufacturing peel and stick solar panels since then.
Peel and stick solar panels have an adhesive back which is normally pressed against a roof during installation. The peel and stick are able to adhere tightly to the roof courtesy of the strong adhesive that is added on their back. They stick flat on the roof and are able to withstand the wind and not fly off. The manufacturers of peel and stick solar panels usually indicate their wind rating.
Uni-Solar’s peel and stick roof panel for example has a wind rating of 185 mph.
These solar panels (also know as laminate solar panels) have come as a relief from the difficult task of installing the normal type solar panels. Regular type solars have to be mounted on a rack and someone has to use a bolt and nut here and there and also hammer or drill. Installation of peel and stick roof panels is however easy. In addition to the other drawbacks, some solar users usually complain that the peel and stick are not as aesthetically attractive as the traditional solar panels. In spite of not being attractive enough on the roof top, the peel and stick solar still has the advantage of minimal interference with the roof. It doesn’t include any hammering work that may introduce holes on the roof.
Peel and stick solar panel is just but one of the many evolutions in solar. Thanks to technology, there are nowadays even mobile solar panels. One can carry these portable solar panels with them wherever they go and even use them to do things such as phone charging or plugging in a laptop.

I think my array ways like 14 so it’s just what i’m using for this today the weather is there’s some sun by it’s kind of cloudy son’s been going in behind the clouds Daisy I guess maybe but not a 100-percent blue sky and sunday so we’re not getting maximum output and i have discovered a few shortcomings with my set up already this is the first time i’ve had this actually out in a field the I need to do something be able to adjust the angle of how far back i can tilt the panels we move around the back another hand friend of mine fashion for me using this aluminum channel is a mounting . and then he built this mounting plate Jenna know if you’ll be able to see this is just sits on top of the actual tripod head and then we’re using a these long nuts and these aluminum bars wing nuts to secure it on there it’s it’s not going anywhere I thought this would be an ideal situation because the tripod i had were 33 access control from rotational standpoint rotating very easy but the problem that I have is the vertical when I guess the tilt this is as far back as it goes and I think I need to be able to get a little flatter than that but you know that’s why we do these things to learn each one down to two feet that all converge on a central power . bus or power Anderson power pole bus that I’m out here on this plate but we haven’t gotten there yet i tried that last night and it’s really tiny soldering and so I got frustrated so that is the array the these panels are great because they’re relatively small if i remember correctly I think there are 11 inches by like 18 or 19 decent-sized these are available online best place I’ve seen them online as amazon.com although the place to buy these if you have a costco membership i’ll add the link to the goal zero page where they show if there’s going to be a roadshow but if you catch these at a goal zero roadshow inside of a costco you can get them for ninety-nine dollars which is a good deal now one other thing I’ll point out these are monocrystalline panels which are with the current consumer technology i believe the most efficient met somewhere between 18 and 20 little more resistant to heating than a polycrystalline or any of the other port type one thing also it kind of comes to the video you’ll see the panels on the bottom have a blue tent the ones on the top have a black these blue panels are about a year old these are in a couple months old so obviously they switch suppliers the actual panels but in theory that shouldn’t actually matter at all so the array by itself is all well and fine but kinda useless so what I did is I built a power box for my amateur radio operations and let’s take a look at that further recommendations a ham form another member of i was introduced to the sportsman’s box made by a company called mtm they’re called spud boxes which is the sportsman’s plus dry box this guy was thirty-three dollars off amazon they make four versions this is the next two largest i’ll have a link to this as well the manufacturer site cuz i remember the dimensions offhand but this box is a heavy-duty plastic it’s water-resistant it’s not submersible but there is an o-ring around the main lid but a couple of unique things in addition to being heavy duty the first thing that I really liked was this lid you see this divider here i was able to install a West Mountain radio rig runner at westmount radio power check and i was able to install my power pole connections you’ll see i have green and grey green and gray is my standard for anything related to solar solar charging so what we do 400 i have a cable a little adapter that connects from their proprietary 4.84 4.75 millimeter plug to Anderson power poles i have a what’s up meter right now you’ll see that the panel voltages of 19 volts right now but there’s no load so come down here and again these ports are for getting to the solar charge controller will show you in a moment the red and black or for connection to the battery to run the power meter in runner [Music] so if i plug this in you’ll notice now that we have a load on getting 42 wats off of what should be a 60-watt array almost three amps of current and it’s running being drawn down to 14.9 seven volts now so we’re running about two-thirds efficiency I blame some of that on again the small gauge cable the array some of the fact that the Sun is not 100-percent out and strong today and some of it might lack of being able to aim this properly but the idea behind this box was that I wanted to build a unit that I could basically run a hundred watt VHF radio at field day without a generator you get in the amateur radio world we have a yearly exercise called field day and it’s designed for us to practice our emergency communications capabilities I wanted to be able to run a station completely without a generator even though I do have a honda to kilowatt generator and this was a setup I came up with so that’s the lid of the box no one thing I’ll add i have 2 20 amp our batteries i got from Batteries Plus in the bottom of the box and parallel giving me 40 amp hours of capability last night I ran the computerized bandit battery analyzer on it ran it down to 11.8 bolts which is where our amateur radio stuff stops working and found that i got 30 amp hours of usage at a 1 amp draw which means i could run my radio and receive for 30 hours just with the setup here without even replenishing the battery which is quite good let’s take a look inside alright so here’s the interior of the box right now it’s pretty sporting what I have here is a morningstar son saver maximum power point tracking charge controller he left two connections are to the panel and I have them running up to the green and gray powerful connections on the box the middle to go to the battery which I’ll show you that down below the two to the right of that are actually made to attach a load the reason that i’m not using that function right now is this thing is only rated for 15 amps my the the hf transceivers i use can drop 20 2 amps at a hundred watts for something like CW or FM which the batteries can handle the charge controller could not so i had to bypass that which is kind of a shame the other thing i have is this morning star remote meter which this thing plugs into the charge controller via phone cable basically and it basically tells me you know what voltage is running is the controller that loading the panels to right now we’re getting over three amps i don’t know if you can see that 3.15 amps occur into the battery i believe and then there’s a quick gauge a red yellow and green that show you the health of the battery which is also on here the other nice thing is that if this were charging my load it would cut disconnect the battery at 10.7 volts which sealed lead acid batteries you don’t want to discharge below 10.5 this tray came with the box and is removable and down below are the two batteries now one thing I still have to do is I do need to get a some styrofoam or something to which those in a little better so they can’t move around but all told I am very happy with this project and the best part is is that with the exception of the things coming out of here I’ve had to drill no holes in the actual box so the box still is waterproof resistant with that late close as I mentioned I during this thing down to 11.7 volts or eliminate volts for my test last night actually gonna stay out here and see if i can get recharged and I we’ve been charging for I don’t know about 40 minutes now we’ll take a measurement here in a bit and see what the batteries are up to so let me know if you have any questions as always i look forward to your comments and hopefully there’s out be this is a maximum power point tracking solar dr charger controller these are a bit more expensive by this guy was over a hundred dollars i don’t remember what i paid like i said i’ll put that information in the comments but the reason you want a maximum power point charge controller is it isolates your solar panels from the battery and what that ends up doing for you is it allows it to keep the panel’s you know solar panels want to be between 15 and 18 volts so it allows you to receive all the power off the things are off the panels that whatever amperage they can put out medical response times amps equals power it can then take the higher voltage and convert it down to the appropriate voltage for the batteries and the results as you get more current into the batteries if you buy a less-expensive charge controller what it ends up doing is the battery is not isolated so it actually pulls the voltage of the panels down whatever the batteries at and you have wasted you’ve wasted power I there I’ve seen some really good sites that explain what these do so i’ll probably try to include a link to that either in this part of the video also in the comments but yea maximum power point tracking charge controllers are the best way to get every ounce of power out of your solar array another couple things about this particular model is it can track it has a temperature sensor built into it a little guy know if you can see that but it also allows you to hook up an external probe connect your batteries i think this thing is really expected to be a lot further from the batteries than what i have but what’s neat is an addition to being able to hook up the meter that I have I can also have an interface i can plug it into a computer i think this thing will log 30 days of data and you can download all that data and graph it charted if you’re really really really interested in tracking performance of your unit one of the thing I’ll point out you’ll notice i have room in that train of course I can throw cables or the wats up meters which are really one of the most indispensable tools you can have the battery’s probably won’t see this very well i have a couple of fuse connectors determinate two power poles and you’ll see i have a powerful jumper running the lid this just gives me flexibility to be able to disconnect that for whatever reason or plug other things and now also with that extra space if I wanted to there’s plenty of room in there to install either a West Mountain radio power gate PG 40s which is a it’s a neat little device it’s basically a ham radio ups you plug the battery in the one side of it you plug a 13.8 power supply into the other and then it has a center tap output that goes to whatever you know directly to a radio or to a reg run or whatever it’ll act as UPS because if you lose mains it will automatically switch your load over to the the battery which is nice but it also has a four-stage built in charge controller so i could do that I the other thing that I have for this box but it’s not out here is a battery tender marine version which is waterproof and also outputs 5 amps which makes charging these guys pretty fast the the other thing i have those i have a West Mountain radioisotope power which is a unit that’s designed to be an automotive battery isolator so i could technically install that in here so that if I ever needed to charge this box off of the vehicle i could so I haven’t decided yet if i’m going to install something permanently or you know I can just leave the boxes in here loose and use them if I need them of course normally with this I would have a lot of jumper cables different things to hook my set up two so again if you have any questions please let me know I very much enjoyed building this the first version of this box was just a group 1 power box sold an auto parts store made to hold a 33 and power battery now the biggest upgrade i made besides the boxes i went from that battery because it just didn’t conveniently fit inside the box i chosen to use but it was a 33 and power battery that I tested on a 1 amp draw down 11.8 bolts will give me about 22 empowers power like It has a fantastic reputation of holding up from continuous use. Output stays good. There are precautions but overall it was/is an excellent panel to locate. It’s widely known that when Unisolar threw in the towel there were stockpiles of inventory around like I was saying earlier. The good news is places like eBay has lots of it…SEE ABOVE
Sometimes you can find really good prices for several of these panels. You can consider them new, they may have some years of sitting someplace but they were made so well it’s defiantly worth looking in to. You will want to make sure the voltage output of the panels is what you can work with but a lot of people figure this out because of Unisolar reputation of holding up. You will all your external components to match up like controllers and inverters.
Some panels are made with MC3 connectors and some with MC4 connectors. Some just had 2 wires out of the bottom. Like any business that is no longer around, Unisolar panels will have to warranty but they are known for lasting decades so this shouldn’t be an issue unless they are damaged somehow. Some people refer solar roof shingles because of their 18 foot length. The way they would lay out on the roof.
Some people buy a whole pallet of these panels when they can find them. It’s another reason I constantly check out eBay because that is where they show up lots of times. Their portability is excellent. They have been know to withstand being rolled up again and again and still have excellent output. As their legend grows because of all the good reviews on the net, the prices on anything unisolar is going to go up.
As I was saying earlier about Unisolars shingles (if they can be found) are in demand. They have received awards like Popular Science’s Grand Award and the Teleological Innovation Award by Discover Magazine. Almost anyone in solar envisions the day that solar components on a roof serve double duty as protection and a generation point for electricity. You would think this would be common place but not quite yet. Unisolar shingles have a blending pattern inherent as traditional asphalt shingles. From my research, UniSolar products are not affected by temperature as much as other brands. In an optimized system they have been know to outperform similar brands. Some reports talk of 20% more output whit factors of shade and cloudy days, etc.

Welcome back to the roof folks. Well I’ve got the battery compartment open for maintenance. I thought I’d explain the whole solar power system to you. I’ve got roughly 2.7 kilowatts of these uni solar flexible self-adhesive panels up here. They’re designed to go on a 16-inch standing seam roof running this way down here to the flat surface between the ribs but this is working just fine. That’s roofing is a good asset price is the same gauge metal and paint. Those panels are connected in strings of three in series with groups of three or brought back here to this panel and paralleled. Each get their own breaker and go out this conduit and the equipment room there it is with the first cover and moved here. The breakers one more for later actually going to need to get another one for later the plan to put six more panels on here over in that area and with the final cover removed you they’re all the negatives joined together in that bar panels grounded they’re all the positives run through the breakers coming in from the panel groups here and out the top to these bars combining it to this 8-gauge we’re going inside that’s running roughly between 80 and 90 volts when producing power lines coming from the roof and go through this disconnect for safety and serviceability and i am able to run 80 or 90 volts thanks to this MPPT charge controller which then converts it to the appropriate voltage to charge by 48 volt battery bank go through another disconnect this one with fuses and how to the batteries one set of wires coming through the wall over there from the charge controller is paralleled with these groups of three equal and players from each end of these series’s the battery’s eight of them and series here three groups of eight and parallel then the three strings of batteries and charge controller come together top of this great old time fuse holder and disconnect that i will not pull an out-and-out to the inverter which powers this sub panel replaced all of the circuits to be powered by solar this inverter is also a battery charger you run out of solar power and want to charge the batteries back up like red turn on this breaker here that would supply power to the charger and on through to the subpanel that was previously solar-powered and if the grid was to shut off well you have a great power on through this thing it would automatically transferred back to solar power battery power however you do it it has its own transfer switch that’s fast enough not to disturb anything automatic backup with this system were able to power just about everything in this small house including 200-foot well pump leaving out the dryer that would be silly and the water heater explain my plans of in previous video in the summer powers a couple of these little window units handle most of the cooling the central air can be powered either way through this transfer switch from my previous video is the central air outdoor unit is powered from the garage panel have this switch to decide what to paint the garage from course this battery compartment is normally sealed up so that the gases event outside through the roof and I think that’s about it thanks for watching feel free to post any questions

hello everybody hope your summer is going great you know mine is so far it’s been pretty busy but today I got some time it’s Saturday and it’s pretty nice day sun’s out slightly so my neighbors are out frantically cutting their grass weed whacking doing all those things that I normally would be doing but today I’m going to take on a different kind of project project for good ol RV here you know to me nothing’s as exciting is harnessing the raw power of the Sun to generate electricity now in order to get power for the Sun you’re going to need a few things obviously some kind of solar panel or collection device you need a charge controller and it’s going to hook to your batteries and you need some cabling and you have to figure out how to run that wire within your RV so this is a different kind of a panel that I picked up from a company called yuna solar actually I got it on Amazon for a steal it’s flexible pieceof on the bottom so it’s going to stick right to my roof and you won’t even know it’s there and this one generates 128 watts and I’m really excited to put it to use so I’m going to go ahead and get started I can’t wait to see how it turns out okay so now I’m up on the roof of the Motorhome and I’ve gone ahead and laid out the panel the way it’s going to look on the roof it’s not stuck to the roof yet but what I want to do is just test all the connections and make sure it’s going to be charging okay like I expect so here’s what it looks like I’ll laid out on the roof you can see this one’s kind of long and it it’s actually 200 and about 215 inches yeah the really cool thing about it is it’s just really low profile and it’s a you won’t even notice actually looking at it from the from the road so I already comes with connections that are going to connect to my charge controller what I’m going to do is I have a an old RV battery with the charge controller hooked up to it so I’m going to go ahead and test the the connections to see if it’s actually going to charge right now it’s a good see it’s really not that sunny out so I probably am NOT going to get a whole lot of current running through it but but it should be plenty to test so let’s go ahead and go down and add go to the battery okay so I’m back on the ground now and what I’ve got here is a two connections coming up with a solar panel so what I can do it’s not connected anything yet what I can do just see what kind of voltage I’m getting out of the panel before I hook it up to the charge controller okay so even with some cloud cover I’m getting about 41 point 6 volts out of this panel so now going to go ahead and set it up to my my little test battery here and check the connections and before we actually hook it up to the RV okay now I’ve got the solar panel hooked up to the my MPPT charge controllers is a 30 30 amp controller I don’t this panels not going to generate up to 30 amps but a you know it’s good to be safe so you can see right now I’m checking the on the controller side I got my voltage meter hooked up to the incoming panel connections positive and negative you can see it’s kind of fluctuating right there between 22 and 25 volts so what did what the charge controller did is it a kind of increased my current and reduce the reduce the volts on the panel so this is a more intelligent controller that’s going to basically optimize the output of your panel and that’s what the MPPT controllers do more about that on the blog I’ll put some more information about MPPT I have to learn about it pretty cool stuff so now if I look at my actually you can see that the blinking light there means that it’s charging that the MPPT is working I’ve got the output charging this battery so I’m going to go in the battery side and you’ll notice that my voltage on the battery is kind of steadily climbing 20 mils 12.7 I was twelve point eight and I was twelve point nine and that’s what the MPPT algorithms do is they just kind of gradually start increasing the voltage on your on your battery and while also giving you more current so it’s sucking more current out of the incoming incoming volts from your panel so it’s getting the most most out of your panel you’ll see some of these listed as a 30% boost in performance these MPPT controllers so this is a fairly inexpensive one I paid a little over $100 for it you can certainly get some really expensive one so this one seems we working fine as long as you don’t as long as you connect it to according to the instructions so yeah so my test seems to be working pretty good I’m pretty happy with the hookup so now I all I have to do is basically put the panel on the roof clean the surface get it stuck down and run some cabling it’s going to be the hardest part I think is going to be is going to be running all the wiring into the inside of the coach and hooking it up so I’m going to go ahead and get started okay now first things first getting ready to put the handle down on the roof but before I did before I do that I went ahead and made sure the roof was nice and clean he uses his camco rubber roof cleaner I want to start with a nice clean roof because this thing’s going to be down somewhat permanently so now I got a nice clean roof and I did this another day and now I’m ready to go ahead and lay the panel out the way I want it and get it to get it adhered to the roof so go ahead and do that get exciting okay so now this panel is on the roof and it’s on there for good so it’s not moving so next step is to do some wiring and I’m going to run the cables let’s see it comes with the pre-wired cable so I have some summit cables that you saw earlier and I’m going to go ahead and run those over to already figure this out run this over to this event and hopefully run it down you have to maybe drill enlarge this hole a little bit and it should come down right near my bathroom which should be able to run it too near where all of my power is so so that’s the next task is to is to pull some cable and I’ll tidy all these things up later looking good huh okay so I’ve successfully run the cable from from the solar panel down through the wall through these little cracks and crevices into the kind of the belly of the beast here this is where all the power comes in and my inverter is here and I know how I’m going to hook this up so I’ve made this fuse thing right now so I’m basically doing a bunch of wiring and I’m getting this getting this thing all wrapped up I got my charge controller here it’s going to be mounted kind of out of the way my wife thinks this is kind of ugly so I don’t really want to put it in a place it’s not going to be readily seen so here’s a picture of the crime scene so all the electronics most electronics in my rake anyway are are located under my bed in the bedroom area so here’s my converter there’s the automatic transfer switch okay I’m going to be hooking up the a charge controller to my battery through this connections through these connections down here and so yes I got kind of a lot of stuff laying around doing a lot of wiring right now and looks kind of like a mess so if this kind of scares you then this project is probably not for you you kind of have to know a little bit about how your rig is wired and especially where the power comes from anyway I’m going to continue on I’m going to get all this wiring done and should be able to wrap this up pretty soon and at least get to where I’m charging right now I have all the power shut off batteries are disconnected all the short powers is connected so god be safe right and we’ll see how it turns out so we’ll check back when I’m done okay now everything’s hooked up and everything seems to be working properly so it’s about time to put the wraps on this project but let’s go see how everything turned out so let’s take a look at the charge controller as I mentioned earlier I wanted to mount it somewhere out of the way because it’s a my wife thinks it’s kind of an eyesore I didn’t want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a really nice flush mounted one so this one will do works just fine so we take a look at it you can see that the blinking red light indicates that it the panel is charging my batteries batteries are pretty well charged at the moment and you can see where I’m on and it’s kind of right right under my bed out of the way but still accessible so the hook-up on this is pretty easy I’ve actually have actually been messing with it for a while now let’s go up on the roof and take a look at the panel finished product see now when it’s sunny out I get real excited knowing that my batteries being charged in the solar panel is just getting that free energy from the Sun let’s take a look at the panel so I you know showed you earlier I got it all mounted and stuck to the roof so a few finishing touches here I painted the cable companion white so it kind of blends in I ran it down into that vent put a few clamps on it so it’s secured nicely to the roof and then I finished up with some some of the self leveling a rubber roof sealant around the edges just to give it a nice finished look and I also put a couple clips here and there just to ensure that it stays securely fastened to the roof I love how this panel is flush mounted to the roof so from the ground you won’t even know it’s up here and I’ll have some ice or you know issue with wind or something rattling around on my roof so I’m really happy about the design and efficiency of this panel pretty cool you know taking a look at my number two battery here as you you may not know it but when might when I bought my coach it came with one battery so I installed a second battery the other ones on the other side of the RV so I got a little meter up here so you can see it’s teetering right between 12 point nine and 13 volts which is a pretty good charge so solar panel is working keeping my batteries topped off and and that’s a good feeling knowing that it’s not even plugged in to shore power the batteries are staying nice and topped off and nice and full so pretty cool so this project is all done I’m really happy with the way it turned out you know is actually a lot less complicated and a lot two went a lot smoother than I thought it would probably due to a lot of the planning I did making sure that I was doing the right thing so now I can’t wait to get out and do some do some boondocking and some camping in the Sun knowing that I won’t have to run my generator as much to keep my batteries charged up so if you want more information about The importance of keeping your new panels clean at all times:
Power capability of a solar panel can be decreased up to 30 percent when it is dirty. So keeping them clean is very important to get maximum output. See manufacture’s website for tips on cleaning correctly to get years of service out of your panels.
But once they’ve reached their peak and start declining in output, most of the parts in solar panels can be recycled. Recycling includes semi conductor materials or glass and large amount of non ferrous and ferrous metals. Some private institutions and non profit organisations are currently involved in recycling operations of solar panels. Recycling possibilities will be based on what kind of modules is used that is silicon based modules or non silicon based modules.
