good morning all I’m out in the garden this morning which is not like me because it’s absolutely freezing out here but I wanted to show you my new solar panel and it’s this and it’s absolutely massive this is a 240 what panel normally intended to be put on a roof but a jaunty got in touch with me and jaunty said I’ve got a spare solar panel from a rooftop installation would you like it and well i’m going to turn down a big solar panel so this is a centro solar s 240p 60 professional now 240 is 240 walks you can see there the the P max maximum power 240 watts p60 i’m pretty sure 60 means that it’s got 60 cells and p i’m guessing means poly crystalline so you can count the 60 cells we’ve got very clearly well actually maybe not very clearly because the busbars kind of her look a bit like dividers but you can see if I get close up but that’s two cells 3 4 5 6 06 across and 10 down as it is in this orientation but what about this poly crystalline thing well that looks a bit like poly crystalline to me you can see the sort of strata of the crystals within the silicon there so i’m pretty sure it is a polycrystalline panel now it’s not a bad day today in terms of sunshine skies reasonably clear the sun is out it’s a little bit hazy but there is sun on this panel unfortunately a bit of a shadow just at the bottom there which i think is the top of the head because the Sun is so low down but I think we can take a couple of measurements of this panel so let’s see how we go jump they also very kindly gave me this clamp meter which actually does do DC amps in the clamp section the moment I’ve just put and probes into it and I measuring DC volts now this thing has mc3 connectors and I don’t have any mc3 is to interface with it so I’m limited in what I can do but anyway we’re getting 35.4 volts let’s take a look at the panel and the open-circuit voltage is quoted there as 36.5 three so a little bit below the open-circuit voltage and that’s almost certainly because I’ve got a little bit of shadowing on that bottom row of six cells now the next thing i want to measure is short circuit current and it’s on there as 8.7 amps well now that’s going to be in full midday Sun in the middle of summer I’m certainly not going to get that now but let’s see what we measure from this panel now this meat doesn’t look like it can measure amps from the probe connections so I’m going to measure amps from the clamp and in order to do that what I’m gonna have to just short circuit the panel so let me take these two connections and connect them together and there shouldn’t be any crack or spark because there’s no actual energy being released this just goes directly into from no current too well short circuit current now I should be a measure that with the clamp meter so that switch that around to DC amps clamp it round the cable and yeah we’re measuring 3.73 . 8 amps now probably a fair bit more than that if i took that shadowing away it is perched up on a piece of wood but i’ll see if i can perch it up on something higher to get more amps right that looks better however perched up on to this what is it a pot planter pot thing so it looks like it’s all in full Sun let’s measure the count again and yeah now we’re getting about 4.8 amps not quite this 8.7 amps maximum the panel that’s not surprising because we’re not far off the middle of winter so 4.8 times 36 volts this thing’s actually generating about a hundred and eighty what’s at the moment which is pretty nice in this low Sun course that hundred 80 watts is just being dissipated into a dead short so something’s probably getting warm so now just gotta decide what I’m going to do with this panel and I’ve had a few ideas I could put it up on the kitchen roof there and get myself a 24-volt grid tie inverter and use it to just offset some of the base load in my house electrics the other thing I thought is I could use it to charge the electric bike because the battery in there is about 25 volts and this panel has a rated voltage or a max power voltage of 20.75 that should be enough to charge that bike battery but it’s just a beautiful thing is new and if you compare it with the hundred watt panel up on the on the friends there it’s also a very big thing Syria

ok youtube this is it. See those large panels right there? Those are 285 watt panels. Four of them set in series, 2 in series and 2 in series. So we have to hook together in series for total of eight amps 570 watts. So they’re wired in series which gives you eight volts. There 24 volt panels so wired in series it’s 80 volts and you see the other panels over there are my other system which is 580 watts, for a 12 volt system. These are going to be driving a 48 volt battery bank. I just put this up today. hi everybody my name is Jim with every fourseasons com and i’m very excited because today we’re going to be going over the installation of a brand-new go power Overlander solar kit these things are great this is a hundred and sixty watt panel they are fantastic and charging up your battery bank after heavy night of usage and if you’re sick of running your generator or your RV or coach motor to charge your batteries is it going to be a really great upgrade for you i love everything solar it’s a lot of fun and even when you do drain your battery’s down the night before then you have to run your generator you generators going to power your converter box and your converter box is going to charge your battery bank and this is a trickle charge so it really takes a lot of time you can’t just run your generator for an hour to expect your battery bank to be fully topped off it really needs to be run for hours and hours to really get a full charge back and that can be really distracting to you or your neighbors or anything else to have your generator running and bees and gas and stuff like that so solar panel on a sunny day is going to do a really good job of providing with this size about 8.8 amps throughout the day in the Sun and that’s going to do a really good job of really top of your batteries off and get them back to where they need to be maybe not a totally full charge because sometimes it takes 24 hours but they do a great job of getting them talk back off and so we’re going to be talking about the specs of this solar panel we’re going to be talking about the tools required and everything like that then we’re going to try to try and walk you through step-by-step as i do this at my house on my RV which is an older RV now it’s important that I cover some basic warnings your RV setup is probably going to be different and you’re going to have to be responsible for your own installation I’m not responsible for any damage you might do to your panels or your installs checked out by a professional before and after you do your setup is ideal but definitely after you do your set up to make sure that everything is wired incorrectly you’re not going to damage anything because the solar panels a pretty big investment and you do not want to destroy that during the installation process would break your heart would be very sad so be very careful check with a professional do all of your homework do some research and you should be just fine i completed this install in one day now it was a long day don’t get me wrong but I was also trying to film the entire process I’m so that definitely slowed me down a bit but that’s around how much time you’re going to expect this is probably a good weekend project for you to make sure you do everything right but if everything goes well and you run into some little shortcuts here and there you can probably do this in a day and it’s a fairly straightforward install now I’d like to talk about the solar panel itself this is a go power hundred and sixty watt solar panel of the kit itself actually includes a hundred sixty watt panel a 30-amp charge controller and you’re going to have about 50 foot of MC for cable and all of your mounting hardware so it really has everything you need to even give you your inline fuses that give you all the nuts and bolts for different roof setups I was really impressed with the kid overall it was very straightforward the directions which i highly recommend that you read are very straightforward as well and made the installation process pretty easy so i’m really liking the go power setup and the overall kit they provided i mean that everything i needed it was all pretty much good to go i will talk about the tools required for this job before we get started it’s you’re going to probably need some other tools in there if you run into some other little problems or things but listed in the instruction manual as the tools required required for this job is a slot screwdriver your prenatal Phillips as well number two Robertson square head screwdriver I’m not sure what that is there what part of the process that was needed for but a keyhole saw or a jigsaw is going to work just fine that’s probably gonna be two kept cut out the whole for the mounting of the charge controller puncher and all just kind of score some things to put holes where you need them pliers wire strippers wire crimpers electrical hand-drill 116 three-eighths inch drill bits 516 716 since wrench and some ceiling which is probably for most of us going to be self leveling lap ceiling but it’s going to depend on the roof that you have so make sure that you do your homework there find out what kind of roof you have get the appropriate sealant because you’re going to want to make sure that you really seal this up well so you don’t have any water leaks water leaks are definitely the enemy so you want to make sure that you have the appropriate ceiling for that I think that about covers that i’m going to be doing this video in about five parts and now you may be thinking a five-part video but the reason I’m doing that is because overall the footage adds up to about 50 minutes so it’s a pretty in depth install and there’s a lot of stuff involved so if you need to go back and repeat a video and maybe kinda go over some information that you might have a mr. you want to rehash you can go back and look in that 10 minutes pan instead of a giant hour long video so that’s the reason I’m gonna be breaking this into five parts and i will be putting little buttons up that will take you to the second video or the video before it and that’s going to help you guys out a little bit so we are going to dive right into this i’m going to take you out to the RV and I’m gonna start going through the setup process and hopefully this will help you out a little bit alright everybody so we have r overlander sole charge kit here and step one is going to be removing it from the box so we’re going to just open the top and tug here coming out I’m are packing materials here in our charge controller and there’s our panel looks like about it ok so we’re going to start by using a razor knife here very carefully you don’t penetrate to deepen the box we’re just gonna kind of an angle here and make sure we get all of our cape here besides now we can open this up one thing i should note is that you want to have a nice soft surface facing down on your Cyrus is a table or whatever you’re working with to protect the panel so what we’re going to do is leave the cardboard down we opened it with the glass slide down and now we can go ahead and mount up our mounting hardware and all of our brackets or like this and the glasses protected right once you go into your bag here we’re going to have three different couches here with mounting hardware so we’re going to go and display that out keep everything together then we’re gonna open one of those bags and begin to assemble the bracket alright we’re going to need to do too fast in these is use a 716 deep socket and seven sixteenths wrench here and we’re going to go ahead and put our brackets on there basically going to sit like this right here so that they’re kind of on the outside of the panel and it allows you to easily drill a hole into the RV roof now i want to put it on like this for now until we tighten it just so you can kind of see what’s going on but you’re gonna have this quarter inch bolt basically just gonna keep that up through like so and then we’re also going to put on top here a washer lock washer and a quarter inch nut getting started here so that’s pretty much what you want to do right there and then of course we’re going to back up back this guy up underneath and use our socket go ahead and tighten that down for us go ahead and adjust this where we need to be here looks pretty good to me right where we want it they’re just nice and tight and now you’re just going to repeat that process for the remaining brackets all the way around the solar panel where you want them and we’ll be moving on to getting this up onto the roof as you’ll notice on the top of well rather the bottom of the solar panel here inside this is going to be where everything comes together for you to power wires and they are marked this as a positive on it this one has a negative on it and so will keep that in mind when we get up there so we can go ahead and plug these into their corresponding wires in our kit and of course going to have our positive cable right here that’s going to plug right into that quick connect and we’re going to have our negative cable that’s going to play plug right into its quick connect all right now before we move this up to the roof we’re going to do something with the cardboard i’m going to cut off these things right here on that seem and we’re going to do that on all four corners so we can put up this cardboard we can use some masking tape to go ahead and secure it to the panel and I’m doing this for a couple of reasons one is going to protect our glass during transport to the roof and perhaps more importantly this is going to prevent power from going through the panel because as soon as you put it in the Sun begins to generate power and although we do have quick connects and everything else i like to keep the power turned off whatever i’m working on anything electrical so even though they’re quick connects and pretty safe to just kind of plug in and go about your business I don’t want any power flowing through this guy while we do our installation so by using the original packaging cutting that off bringing that up it’s going to completely cover the top of the solar panel and that’s going to prevent it from soaking up any light and producing any power so we’re gonna go and do that all the way around on all four corners I just want to go ahead and flip the panel over to show you what a good job that original packaging is going to do it keeping this out of the Sun completely enclosed on all four corners and well-protected against any scratches and scrapes when we put it up on the roof alright so now that we have the solar panel up here on the roof of his facedown we still have our protective cardboard cover on of course and we’re going to go ahead and connect these because once we flip it over it’ll be a little more difficult to do so right here we have our cable it’s clearly marked positive and our red one is also marked positive and this says do not connect under load or disconnect under load which is good advice and luckily we do not have any load on here when I hooked into the batteries the solar panel is face down and it’s also completely covered by the cardboard so we’ve been we flip it over it’s still not going to be under load which is good you have a little rubber plug in here we’re gonna pull that out and these are just going to slip together and click into place and you should feel it kind of click give it a tug make sure it’s good and connected and that’s all we have to do for that one now we’re going to do our negative cable again clearly marked negative clearly marked negative and take out the plug on that one go ahead and connect these just like that will make sure that we get a good snap in there it’s nice and connected and we are good to go the other end of this cable is just going to be ready to be stripped and connected to our charge controller so we’re good to go now those are connected i’m going to kind of run them off to the side and get the wires out of the way for us we’re going to turn this panel over and start installing it on the roof now what you’re going to want to do is go around and Mark all of these holes with a pencil so that we can pull that up and if you need to you can do your pre-drilling for me this is into plywood so we’re just going to be able to pretty much go straight in with our screws and we’re going to be good to go but you want to go ahead and Mark where all those are so we can apply our lap steel and stuff like that and go ahead and screw these down all right then if necessary can go and draw your little pilot holes here and we’re going to be good to go to add our laps he left and then our screws all right now what we’re going to want to do here is you want to lift up your solar panel a little bit and clear away some of this debris so it’s nice and flush and you’re going to want to add a pretty generous amount of laps he went down here to just make sure that a when we do screw this down it’s going to make a nice seal for us all the way around so I’m just going to put a nice big dollop there for us that’s gonna be just fine and you’re going to want to do that for all three of your brackets three or two or however many you’re using on this usually comes with two and then they give you a couple of extra ones so that if you want to get the lifting panel lifting arms you can do that and use those for the lifting arm but i’m not going to be using a lift arm on this so i just used the third the the extra brackets just to make sure that this is extra held in place give it a little more of but now that we have that done you can go and place these down and they’re gonna push out that lapsi went all the way around there and that’s perfect that’s exactly what we want to happen and then i’m going to go ahead and show you the screws that came with the unit that be fine for you to use in the this application to give you a couple of different things you have these screw grommets that you can use if you need to put those into different types of roofs but basically if you have a 10 roof with plywood underneath like we have in this application to give you some of these guys which would probably be fine however this is an older RV and I want to make sure that this is going to be really good and secured you want to be careful when you’re upgrading any kind of hardware at all because I it’s possible that you could penetrate into the roof of the RV so you want to make sure these are short enough you have enough room in there i’m going to be using these a bigger guys right here these a quarter-inch believe in should a half but that’s going to be just fine for us it’s not going to poke through the wall or anything like that so alright now that we have these in place we’re going to go ahead and just start drilling these guys then ok so that’s nice and secured and we’re going to go ahead and add some more lap sealant on top just to make sure that we’re going to be nice and sealed here and I know it’s kind of a messy application this stuff’s never very easy to work with but you want to use a generous amount and it is going to self level so when we leave this overnight this is actually going to smooth out quite a bit and look ok for us so even though you know you might want to smooth that out with your finger really unnecessary it is going to kind of smooth itself out overnight and we’re going to be in good shape and so now you want to just basically go through this application and all the rest of your brackets well my name is Jim with every four seasons calm and i hope you The most common material used among the different types of solar cells is a substance known as crystalline silicon. In the context of solar energy, this material is often referred to as “solar grade silicon.” Silicon-based solar cells can be further divided into three separate categories.
Monocrystalline or single-crystal silicon is among the most common of the different types of solar cells. These cells are manufactured through a detailed process of purifying, melting, and crystallizing the silicon into solid ingots, or bars. With the purified silicon crystallized, it is cut into thin discs which are laid out over the surface of a solar panel. Like other types of silicon solar cells, the cells are activated when photons strike the surface of the cell.
Photons are the small particles of energy which constitute sunlight. Photons striking the solar cells causes a disruption and directional flow of electrons, a phenomenon which constitutes electrical current, and in this case, the basis of solar power.
Polycrystalline or multicrystalline silicon cells are another type of solar cell which make solar energy possible. These cells are manufactured in a process similar to that of monocrystalline silicon cells. However, multicrystalline silicon cells utilize lower cost silicon, resulting in diminished efficiency. Despite this drawback, the reduced cost of these types of solar cells may outweigh the resulting loss of harnessing solar energy.
A third type of of silicon solar cells is known as ribbon silicon. Rather than crystallizing the silicon into a solid bar, these solar cells are made by drawing molten silicon into a long ribbon and eliminates the processing of cutting silicon into discs. Although ribbon silicon is less efficient than polycrystalline solar cells, costs are greatly reduced, as the silicon used is a lower grade.
Furthermore, since this process does not involve cutting of the material, there is little to no waste of silicon, further reducing production costs.
In contrast to crystalline silicon solar cells, thin film solar cells are assembled with several layers of different types of solar power-producing materials. This type of solar cell is also referred to as “amorphous silicon,” as it lacks the crystal-like structure present in crystalline silicon solar cells. There are several different types of thin film solar cell materials, including amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, copper indium gallium selenide, and dye-sensitized solar cells.
This variation of solar cells allows portions of light to pass through the first layer, where it can be absorbed in subsequent layers. Because sunlight exists in different wavelengths, the different layers of a thin film solar cell can be adjusted to absorb different wavelengths of light and convert them in to solar energy. Thin film solar cells are much less efficient than other types, but are also much less expensive. A great deal of research is being dedicated to improving the efficiency of thin film solar cells. Of all the different types of solar cells, these have tremendous promise as a large-scale, cost effective solar power option.

Some in the USA, it’s not that anyone is going out of business, it’s just the technology is improving so much that panels become obsolete to the manufactures and they blow the panels out to wholesalers who buy large amounts of this stock. Then they turn around and sell it on eBay at stil very good prices.
You still get factory warranty in a lot of situations so it’s worth looking in to. If you buy large amounts, there will be shipping to pay also but I would think anyone buying a large system would know this and work it in to the cost of having a solar system.
So you can consider them still brand new stock when you buy it like this, it just has to move out to make room for next year’s model so to speak. Especially as output goes up on panels. A lot of these panels will have c4 connectors which are nice because of being weather proof or should I say better than most. Keep in mind how you wire your panels and the other components will dictate the guage of wiring that you will need.
I’ve seen systems lately that have thinner guages because the way the voltages are stacked up to be higher with certain inverters. When you get in to grid systems, most places require a licensed electrician to hook up. Usually with this type of system the installer has these details worked out. It is nice to have and some of the deals recently I’ve seen can make this a reality for more and more people.
Mounting of solar panels is of two types such as roof based mounting and ground based mounting. (Unless of course you pick up one of new flexible or folding type panels for personal projects) Both the roof and ground panels will need pole mounts or ballasted footing mounts and additionally ground mounts consists of foundation mounts.
The flexible panels are also becoming more common online at good bulk prices. My dream would be to have them on my roof instead of shingles but that is still a bit more out of my budget. I’ve seen situations where the adhesive type works as shingles.

The real beauty is the cost. You can start on a limited budget and add on as you go. Sometimes when you’re in the middle of a solar project you find that your location needs to be moved or you find you have more room than you thought, adding more panels will be no problem.
The 100 watt panels these days are so light they are easy to maneuver in tight spaces, climbing a ladder, etc. On boats they are perfect whether they are fixed or movable. I love moving panels around in the yard when I can. Of course there’s nothing like an auto tracing mount system to track the sun but that’s not in my budget at this time.

hey guys just want to do a little video for you for about a hundred watt solar panels. What you get around on them, this is a question i had when i was getting mine which is kind of reason that I got my setup to kind of get an idea of what it could do on what. I have is a hundred watt of energy solar panel with a PWM charge controller have got to six full duracell golf cart batteries wired in parallel. Positive negative to give me a 12-volt battery bank at 225 amp hours now what that means is i have a hundred watts and our charging capability and I’ve got 225 amp hours of capacity of my batteries. Now if you haven’t done a lot of research on this, the amp hours you have to take times amps which will give your wattage. So for 225 amps I’ll have 2500 watts to play and I can only take my battery’s down to fifty percent discharged. So i only have twelve hundred and fifty watts you know before i have to recharge your batteries that I can use so my panel by Renogy panel and peak hours usually get about 80 watts an hour on it. 25 Watt Solar Panels As you can see below there are different styles. Some 25 watt panels are completely portable. They can fold up like a laptop case and placed in your tote bag. Use it for your phone, tablet, etc. And then there’s the panel modules that go anywhere from your back porch, camper to your boat. Some attach to frames and some are free standing.
I was looking at one that has an interesting suction mount that is lever release. Seems to have the ability to hold well. Of course I wouldn’t leave it on anything moving down the highway for example. There are plenty of times it would be nice to have a panel with a quick mounting option for a secure fit. One example might be when the wind is a little brisk.
I was reading some info on how a guy was living out of his van using solar most of the time. Had a nice 2000 dollar system so he was all set. He was asked to test out a 25 watt panel. He said the first thing that crossed his mind was what am I going to do with that? He’s used to 100 watt panels. So he got to thinking that a lot of times when he’s away from the van, like biking he has power requirements. Mainly he likes to listen to his cell phone music and he also was using a GoPro on his helmet. Then he thought that would be cool to keep those items charged up during the day. Especially in situations where he was away from the van for awhile.
Then he decided the way it unfolded he could also use it on his backpack or even spread out over the back of his motorcycle. It could also be used in a coffee shop. Lots of times when they are crowded the plugs are being used to he thought since the panel was small enough he could put it in the window and get what he needed.
The second question is how well do they work? Does cloudy days matter? I would bet some but the panels of today are sooo much better with cloudy days. There are improvements constantly of even the same model I noticed on Amazon, so the companies are paying attention to feedback from buyers in the field. The one I was looking at had 2 usb output ports and had a nice zipper.
Also came with some nice carabiners (metal hooks) to secure it to backpacks. So this little 25 watt fold able panel is looking better to this reviewer so he pull out his iPhone and tablet. It jumped right on the iPhone but not when he plugged in the tablet, he had to unplug the phone and then the tablet kicked in starting to charge nicely. The interesting thing is after the tablet was plugged in he was able to then plug in his iPhone. Maybe the stronger current pull has to lead off?
He was charging nicely after that. One interesting thing is notice in reviews that if people are talking about the snugness of the USB connectors. I know from using a lot of office equipment that sometimes plugs just seem different sizes….not loose but some seem to be almost too tight to the point you have to check to see if you have the right USB connector. Big difference when he got pointed directly at the sun but this isn’t really a surprise to anyone. So in no time he goes from 54% on the phone to 83%,,,or should I say in normal charging time using solar he had that bump. So that is impressive.
Right when the amps were measured he was getting 2.4 amp so that’s not too shabby for a 25 watt panel.

hi folks I’ve mounted my solar panel I just put the solar panel on this metal roof that I’ve got covering my porch and I’ve got it no more or less semi-permanent setup here it is temporary but I want to have it up there probably at least a couple weeks so I wanted to do at least a half decent job of putting it up there neatly and so that it won’t get tangled up now it’s going down and to the bottom of that window which is the window to the room where I have my where I have my portable power pack and also my PWM charge controller and I’ll show you how I got it in there so what I did is I actually drilled a hole in the corner of that screen and then through the window window fittings itself and I put a small hole and I wanted it for the window with clothes and the the wire wouldn’t get all crimped up or anything but I also wanted to have it so that I could plug up those holes once I’m done doing this so here is my little setup and got inside the room now and makes it easier to see these lights it’s hard to see these when it’s all them the bright Sun but that bright one on the Left means that I’ve got a charge coming from my solar panels and the one next to it in the middle is what that means when it’s green like that is that it’s charging the battery if that was flashing then the battery would be completely charged so I’m going to wait and see how long it takes to charge up this portable power pack using that 80 watt panel or the 240 watt panels that I have up on the roof now and I’m going to guess it’s only a guess that that will be completely charged by by this evening sometime probably around six or seven and it’s May 25th right now so the Sun stays up for a good long time we’re going to end it’s a bright sunny day out there there’s not a cloud in the sky so I should be able to get this whole thing completely charged up in that length of time we’ll see this is a this is an unexpected result now I’ve only had this set up now plugged into the battery on this power pack here I’ve only had it set up for about an hour and when I started the the battery was a little bit over 12 volts and now it’s over 13 volts and this charge controller is saying that it’s completely and fully charged and I really wasn’t expecting it to take such a short amount of time it’s far faster than I thought it was because when I use the AC charger it came with this power pack takes a long time to charge it up takes a you know to start with you’re supposed to charge it for thirty four hours and then or is it 48 I forget and then no longer than 34 after that and so I’m I’m very amazed that it took such a short amount of time to charge up that battery I had it at the low power I used it powering up some some lights and in the house here and I used it and ran that battery down now it’s already charged up and it only took a it only took a little bit more than an hour I didn’t exactly time it but it wasn’t a long time so I’m pretty surprised and anyway that that’s about it for this part of it now the next part of the to buy a 35 amp hour sealed battery and there’s one on Amazon that I intend to buy and it cost $65 and once I get it and hook up the power pack to that battery then this experiment will be more or less complete I’ll I’ll just hook that up and power some things with it and I’m probably also going to get a different inverter than the one that I have the one I have is pretty small I’m going to buy one from Harbor Freight yeah I know Harbor Freight sucks but I think this will be okay I really do it’s going to be a fairly large power inverter and we’ll have to just see what happens once I get it so that’s it for this video thanks for watching
